Portable Gauge Safety Training
This course will cover the following topics:
- Radioactivity
- Radiological health and safety
- Regulations
- Monitoring radiation
- Transporting and shipping
Use the list of lessons to the right to navigate through the different lessons within the course. All lessons must be reviewed to be able to take the course quiz.
Once the test is completed you will be able to print your certificate. The certificate will have your name on it with the date of attendance. Once printed, your Radiation Safety Officer will sign the certificate verifying that you completed the test satisfactorily and that hands on training will be conducted for the specific gauge you will be operating.
There is no expiration date for the radiation safety portion of the course. Although your companies radioactive material license may dictate that refresher training is required at a specified interval.
49 CFR, subpart H (HAZMAT) requires recurrent training depending on how you transport your nuclear gauge. According to current requirements, if you ship your gauges by ground transportation (i.e. private vehicle, company vehicle, trucking company) you are required to attend recurrent training every three years. If you ship your nuclear gauge by air such as FedEx, you are held to a two year requirement.
Why is Training Required?
The safe use and transportation of radioactive (Hazmat) materials is critical to our safety and the safety of the general public. When procedures are not followed, you put yourself and the general public in danger. Many governing agencies monitor these materials and their use. In addition, agencies can issue fines to the Company, Radiation Safety Officer and gauge user. Fines can be in the thousands. By following current regulations and procedures for the safe use and transportation of radioactive materials, accidents/incidents/fines can be reduced and/or eliminated.
This Portable Gauge Radiation Safety and Hazmat Training course will provide you with the information and procedures needed to operate and transport portable gauges safely. It is up the individual to then take this information and put its contents into practice.

New gauge users and experienced users requiring refresher
training.
Will I be able to operate a nuclear gauge immediately upon completion of the course?
After you complete the course your Radiation Safety Officer or supervisor
will sign the certificate verifying that you completed the test satisfactorily.
On the job training should also be
conducted to further understand the operation on the specific nuclear gauge you
will be operating.
Can I pay for the course now and take it later?
Yes. After you pay for the course, the computer will provide
you with an access code, which you can enter in at a later date.
How long will the course take to complete?
The course is based on an 8 hour timeframe for a new user,
but depending on the individuals familiarity with nuclear gauges it may take
less.
When do I get my certificate?
Once you satisfactorily complete the online test you will
have the ability to print the certificate immediately on your printer. (We
suggest a color printer)
